The debut wristwatch from young Russian master Anton Suhanov, the Racer Jumping Hour GMT is a cool and daring concept, whose distinctive dial layout is inspired by the instrument cluster and indicators on a car’s dashboard, and features a triple retrograde display made possible through an in-house conceived and developed mechanism.

Honing and refining his talent under the watchful eye of Russia’s greatest ever watchmaker, Konstantin Chaykin, at whose side he has spent the years since 2007, Anton Suhanov has already been recognised for his skills with the Young Watchmaker’s Award in 2016, and for the magnificent and highly complicated clocks with which he established his own eponymous brand.

The Racer Jumping Hour GMT is a superb piece of contemporary horologic innovation and design, which takes the popular theme of automotive-inspired styling in a different direction to the speed fixated world of the chronograph, and instead focussing on one of the emotive pleasures which comes from the pure enjoyment of driving.

Set against a black dial with deep guilloché decoration, the hours and minutes are displayed across a pair of light blue dashboard-like ‘clocks’ which, with their markings and pointers, authentically capture the look of a speedometer and rev counter. Coupled with Suhanov’s in-house retrograde mechanism, the hands spring back to zero as they reach the end of their cycles, with the minutes on the right, and the hours on the left. Whilst the minutes have a sweeping action, the hours, as with the second GMT hour digit jump from hour to hour, and a linear twenty second display between the hours and minutes completes a triple retrograde feature of this remarkable watch. The date is also displayed in the round aperture at the six o’clock position.

Measuring a compact 39mm and manufactured in stainless steel, the case is mostly finished with a grained brush effect, with polished angles and edges which create an eye catching contrast. A nipple-like pusher just above the crown adjusts the GMT hour digit, which can be used as a reminder of home time, while the analogue dials show local time when travelling.

A sapphire caseback reveals an unusual oscillating weight, which is a full disc engraved with a shutter design, and which conceals the movement within. Using a Swiss ETA 2824-2 self winding movement as a base, the young watchmaker invented and developed his own highly complex module to achieve the Racer Jumping Hour GMT’s unique functionality.

Finished to the exacting standards of traditional haute horlogerie, the Su100.20 calibre operates at a brisk 28’800vib/h (4hz), with a minimum power reserve of thirty-eight hours. The Racer Jumping Hour GMT is presented on a black leather strap with red stitching and a pin buckle, and is produced in a limited production of only twenty pieces.
