An exceptional and very beautiful piece of contemporary independent haute horlogerie, the Harmonious Oscillator RS23 by Rudis Sylva is a quite remarkable wristwatch which combines eye catching aesthetics and meticulous hand finishing with genuinely groundbreaking horologic innovation.

With a flat-sided mid-section, sculpted lugs and domed sapphire crystal the styling of the round case of the RS23 is both modern and elegant. Manufactured in Grade 5 titanium its surfaces feature vertical brushed and polished finishes, and measuring 44mm across and 12.9mm tall, it has a distinguished presence on the wrist.

Slightly distorted beneath the curved ‘box’ rim of the sapphire glass, the chapter ring extends out above and overhangs the dial, opening onto the quite spectacular three dimensional and symmetric display of open worked mechanical architecture and contrasting silvered and gold tones. The time is displayed via a flame blued central seconds hand and sharply defined hour and minute hands in 5N rose gold plating. The hands are skeletonised and taper to sharp tips, in the form of the conifer trees which encircle the small Swiss watchmaking village of Les Bois, where Rudis Sylva watches are individually manufactured by hand.

The two exposed barrels deliver their energy down through the gear train to the patented Harmonious Oscillator mechanism, which is suspended beneath a curved bridge, and whose hypnotic animation dominates the display. With its dual hairsprings, which appear to ‘breathe’ in and out in an alternating rhythm, within counter-directionally rotating balance wheels, that energy is regulated by a single escapement, and the tiny interlocking teeth on each wheel ensure an almost perfect and instantaneously self compensation rate of isochronism, which is consistent  throughout the entire cycle of power reserve, which is approximately 72 hours.

A truly revolutionary concept which defies the conventional theory that the balance wheel should be absolutely free running, and never come into contact with any other element, the Harmonious Oscillator is an ingenious innovation which challenges one of the fundamental principles of watchmaking.

Presented on a black alligator leather strap with titanium pin buckle the Rudis Sylva RS23 Titanium is manufactured in a limited production of only eight pieces, making it as exclusive as it is a triumph of micro engineering.
