Roger Dubuis Excalibur 42 Automatic – Stone Dial
It’s quite easy to overlook the fact that Roger Dubuis is a relative newcomer to the watch manufacturing arena, having made their debut as recently as 1995. Established by Mr Roger Dubuis, a master watchmaker of rare distinction with a natural flair for horology’s most complex challenges and a penchant for skeletonisation, these traits would in time define his watches and indeed his brand.
Acquired by the Richemont Group in 2008, the Roger Dubuis name has been sympathetically nurtured by its new owners and today the watches which bear his name remain true to the philosophies first established when he founded his company.
With a dial composed of intense royal blue Lapis Lazuli, the Roger Dubuis Excalibur 42 Automatic Stone Dial edition adds a stunning new countenance to the company’s flagship collection.
For this model the designers at Roger Dubuis have retained the signature styling codes of the Excalibur range. However, on the dial they appear more understated than ever before, allowing the resplendence of the special dial material to shine through.
Lapis Lazuli, which is historically known as the stone of friendship and truth lends itself perfectly to watchmaking. And, as it is a gift from nature, each dial in this 188 piece limited edition promises to be unique.
The nuances of the precious deep blue hue of the Lapis Lazuli and its unique flecked appearance provide a beautiful backdrop for the indications. In previous Excalibur models, the distinctive roman numerals, which are synonymous features of Roger Dubuis, have been boldly represented. However for this striking edition, they elongate towards the centre-dial, reduced almost to shadows. This restrained styling approach, which has been employed to emphasise the eye-pleasing effect of the Lapis Lazuli, results in a dial which is the epitome of elegance.
The hours and minutes are served by two elegant, faceted hands and a diminutive minute track, and the refinement continues with a trim, polished example of the company’s trademark notched bezel, which provides a polished frame for this exquisite dial.
The piece is housed within a polished white gold 42mm Excalibur case, with contrasting satin-brushed sides, while the crown bears the Roger Dubuis logo.
Through the transparent exhibition caseback the in-house Manufacture Calibre RD622 features almost 180 individual components, with each part beautifully hand finished to incredibly exacting standards. The sweeping curves of each plate is edged in rounded anglage, a process renowned for its difficultly, and their polished curves contrasts against the perfect Côtes de Genève finishing on the plates. The recessed micro rotor reduces the overall height of the movement and is another engaging feature whilst maintaining the original 52 hour power reserve.
The high-end finishing demanded from the strict criteria of the Poinçon de Genève, together with the stunning Lapis Lazuli dial make this Excalibur 42 Automatic Stone Dial Edition an exceptional proposition.
