For a brand which debuted as recently as 2004, RJ has never been cautious about creating watches with such distinctive characteristics that they could be recognisable from across a crowded room. Using exotic materials and oversized proportions, each RJ collection has been big, brash and uncompromising, with pronounced detailing and outgoing personalities.
Even though it measures an imposing 46mm across, the RJ Moon Dust Chronograph is one of the brand’s smaller men’s models, but with its elongated lugs and four claws which straddle the bezel it’s still got the RJ DNA and that always means cool, contemporary styling and enormous presence on the wrist.
The rounded stainless steel case is certainly not subtle, and it features a bezel with carbon fibre inserts, whose familiar black weave interrupted by the four claws, into which the piston-like chronograph pushers are integrated either side of the crown.
Underneath the gentle dome of sapphire crystal, the mottled texture of the mineral grey dial resembles the surface of the moon, complete with fissures and craters which create a strange, but a fascinating backdrop for the watch’s primary functions. and just above, stencilled on the underside of the sapphire crystal, discreet cross hair marks are cool little details which call to mind a camera image from a lunar lander as it descends onto the moon’s surface.
Three subdials display the thirty-minute and twelve-hour chronograph counters, which are accented with rhodium plated rims, at the 3 and the 6, while at the 9, the small constant seconds are indicated by a red pointer which is styled after a solar panel array.
On the reverse, a solid caseback bears the engraved image which depicts the impression of the first footstep on the moon. Inside and out of sight, beats the mechanical self winding Calibre RJ001-CH1 chronograph movement, which operates at 28,800 vph and boasts a power reserve of 48 hours.
With its dominating proportions and contemporary styling the RJ Moon Dust is a watch with massive presence. It is presented on a black rubber strap with folding deployant clasp and is rated to 30m of water resistance. It is produced in a limited run of only 50 pieces.
