A watch which adds one of the most romantic and evocative of all horologic complications to the company’s portfolio, the new S5 Moon Phase by Garrick is a beautifully executed piece of classically inspired, hand crafted watchmaking, from this most traditional of UK based independent watch manufacturers.
Because each piece is manufactured individually with bespoke detailing, and finished by hand in the company’s Norfolk atelier, production of the S5 Moon Phase is limited to only ten pieces per year, and thanks to the extensive menu of options, no two watches will ever be identical, which by default makes each one unique.
With its small team of master watchmakers, this remarkable artisanal company has resisted the obvious cheaper option of outsourcing any components which it was possible to either manufacture either in-house or source locally, by stoically persevering and refining its capabilities to earn its reputation for uncompromising attention to detail the hard way. Garrick truly is a labour of love, and each one of its watches are meticulously produced by hand.
Measuring 39mm across and standing only 8mm tall, the case of the S5 Moon Phase is slender and universally sized, thus providing a very comfortable fit on the wrist, where it has an elegant and reserved presence. Available in either 904L surgical grade stainless steel or 18ct yellow gold, the polished case features tapering lugs and a fluted crown.
Beneath a gently curved sapphire crystal, the dial of the S5 Moon Phase is a showcase for the artisanal craftsmanship which defines Garrick’s creations. Manufactured and finished entirely by hand, each dial is decorated using 19th century rose engine lathes to create mesmerising guilloché patterns which decorate the inner and peripheral parts of the dial. Separating them, a brushed silver ring features hand painted roman numerals and minute markers, with the classical moon phase display, prominent at the six o’clock position, comprising a silvery moon against a dark blue, starry night sky. To personalise the watch, options include a choice of dial colours, and a choice of blued, polished or grained hands.
On the underside of the watch, a sapphire exhibition caseback reveals the proprietary UT-G05 Calibre manual winding movement which powers the S5 Moon Phase. Oscillating at a frequency of 3Hz (21,600 vib/h), the focal point is the Garrick Trinity balance wheel, which is secured beneath a three point bridge, which is a unique Garrick feature. The frosted finishing and traditional, austere architecture is inspired by the style of the early pocketwatches which were produced in England in the 18th century. The base movement is modified with the addition of the moon phase module, which itself is easily adjustable via a quick-set function. The movement boasts an impressive sixty hour power reserve.
The S5 Moon Phase is a superb and highly individual watch from an increasingly important independent watch company which has already established a strong reputation among the international collector's community for its distinctive aesthetics and the quality of the craftsmanship which goes into every piece..
It is presented on a choice of alligator, ostrich, buffalo and sustainable calfskin straps to complement the dial colour combination, and is fitted with a stainless steel or gold pin buckle.
