Affirming their place at the highest echelon of British Watchmaking, the S3 MK 2 Steel watch by Garrick is flawless in its detailing, execution and assembly. This beautiful addition to the portfolio of the Norfolk-based independent watchmaking company boasts the refinement one would expect from a Haute Horlogerie timepiece, yet it also perfectly captures Garrick’s distinctly contemporary take on England’s centuries-old watchmaking traditions and aesthetics. A collector’s timepiece through and through, only 5 pieces in this handcrafted series will be made per year.
While relatively youthful in watchmaking terms, independent watchmaking company Garrick have nonetheless almost single-handedly reawakened atelier-based watchmaking in Britain. Since their founding in 2014, this quintessentially English brand have grown organically and beautifully, introducing in-house capabilities back into the landscape of British horology with a range of small series timepieces. Resting firmly at the high-end of their collections, the S3 MK2 is the company’s most technical model to date, and it provides an excellent showcase for the artisanal workmanship which makes Garrick watches stand apart.
Openworked, and exhibiting superb equipoise, the dial side of the Garrick S3 MK 2 Steel elevates the character of the watch, giving the wearer an intimate view of the components of the UT-G04 manual wind calibre. Building upon their achievements with previous calibres, the components of the movement have been almost entirely reworked by the Garrick watchmaking team in order to achieve a perfectly flushed alignment with the mainplate, adding to the aesthetic pleasure of the arrangement. Crafted using traditional methods and old-school finishing techniques, many of the movement parts have been made in-house, and with black polished surfaces and hand-bevelled edges displayed against a hand-frosted gold or rhodium-plated backdrop, the contrast on Garrick’s S3 MK 2 Steel is superb.
An outer chapter ring displays the minutes, and with a small seconds display and a power reserve at the upper, perfect symmetry is achieved. Secured beneath a black polished and straight-grained bridge, Garrick’s Trinity free-sprung balance wheel dominates the lower dial, and has a character that is as stoically English as can possibly be. This noble and magnificent feature is complemented by the company’s signature Maritime hour and minutes hands which are finished with generous heat-blued anchor-formed counterweights.
The GARRICK S3 MK 2 Steel watch is presented in a polished case of 904L polished stainless steel. Sized at 42mm across and with a height of 11mm, it has a flattened waist, a rounded bezel and its contoured lugs are enhanced by an onion style crown. On the underside, a sapphire caseback reveals the reverse of the exclusive Garrick UT-G04 manual wound movement.
Part of a series that is limited in production to only 5 pieces per year, the Garrick S3 MK 2 Steel watch comes presented on a handmade leather strap in various options at the client’s request.
