Featuring a dial surface shimmering with warm nuances, the Fears Brunswick 40 Copper Salmon watch brings a touch of resplendence to the wrist. Presented in a 40mm stainless steel cushion shaped case, and powered by a customised Swiss ETA 2824-2 automatic mechanical movement, the dial tone of this edition recalls an example once used by Fears in the 1940s and 50s, and this superb model is brimming with quintessentially British style references.
One of Britain’s oldest watch companies, Fears has a significant history which dates back to 1846, when the founder Edwin Fears first established the business in Bristol, England. Now in the safe hands of the founder’s great-great-great-grandson, Nicholas Bowman-Scargill, who reawakened the family business from a lengthy slumber, Fears are once again firmly rooted within the landscape of British watchmaking.
Inspired by the company’s rich heritage, the case of the Brunswick 40 Copper Salmon watch takes inspiration from a gentlemen’s cushion cased watch from the 1920s. Crafted from stainless steel, and sized at 40mm across, the curved profile of the casing is enhanced by a high polish finish, with hand-graining on the top of the case corners, and it is fitted with a bespoke, screw down crown.
The visual highlight of Fears’ new Brunswick 40 Copper Salmon model is its beautifully executed dial surface, which is rendered using galvanic coatings of 18ct rose gold and copper. Arranged on two levels, with a hand brushed vertical finish on the outer, and a recessed and delicate sandblasted frosted central section, it has a stunning light-catching aesthetic.
The hand applied numerals display the company’s custom ‘Edwin’ typeface. Paying meticulous attention to the minutiae, each numeral is milled and diamond polished then coated with a black gold finish. Similarly the distinctive Fears-shaped hour and minutes hands, also black gold plated, have a bevel cut on their centre and are diamond polished. These are joined by a central seconds hand which stretches out towards a traditional railtrack scale at the dial’s perimeter.
The watch is powered by a top-grade Swiss mechanical automatic calibre, which has been serviced and finished in Britain, the movement is decorated with Côtes. For this model, the calibre has also been fitted with a custom decorated rotor, and has been modified to remove the date mechanism thus allowing for precise time setting.
The Fears Brunswick 40 Copper Salmon watch comes presented on a Raven Black Buffalo leather strap, line with Alcantara, secured with a steel pin buckle.
