An extraordinary horological creation, to celebrate an extraordinary human and technical feat. The Gagarin Tourbillon by legendary independent master watchmaker Bernhard Lederer is a piece of profound complexity, inspired by the exploits of cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, when he became the first human being in space, during his historic flight aboard the Vostok 1 capsule as he completed the first orbit of the earth on April 12, 1961.
Featuring a spectacular three dimensional display beneath a sapphire crystal dome, the Gagarin Tourbillon's dial is dominated by the sixty-second tourbillon which is suspended on an arcing blued pylon, high above the surface of the dial, where the names of the cities, territories and oceans over which Gagarin's capsule passed are engraved. With the letters VOSTOK incorporated into the design of the cage, it actually revolves around the dial like a satellite, in a 108 minute counter clockwise cycle, a reference to the trajectory and length of time of Gagarin's flight into history and immortality.
Measuring 46.5mm (42mm only without the magnifying ring) across and 15mm tall, the case is manufactured in 950/1000 platinum and features the unusual addition of an on-board magnifying loupe, which, while contributing to the dimension of the piece, is articulated and can be raised and moved around by hand to examine the tourbillon, wherever it may be on the dial.
Unique piece manufactured in 2022, Bernhard Lederer's Gagarin Tourbillon is powered by an in-house designed and developed manual winding movement, which boasts an impressive eighty hours of power reserve, and a brisk 4Hz frequency (28,000 vib/h).
