With a sophisticated technical arrangement and breathtakingly beautiful aesthetics, the Luna Magna Platinum Meteorite watch by Arnold and Son is an alluring proposition. Featuring one of the industry’s most majestic examples of a moonphase, which for this edition is displayed within a meteorite dial setting, this 28 piece limited edition has already shown its prestige by earning an official nomination in the 2022 GPHG awards.
On a dial of sand-coloured PVD-treated meteorite, the visual highlight of the watch is its three-dimensional moonphase which is 12mm in diametre and which has been crafted from opal for its near side, and dark meteorite for its dark side. Accompanying this spectacular miniature art-form, the hours and minutes are displayed on a decentralised inner dial of white opal, whose milky white surface features roman numerals and arrow-tipped openworked blued hands. Adding a sense of drama, the Super-LumiNova applied to the moonphase and to the hours and minutes dial glows with an ethereal blue-green tone after dark.
The watch is housed within a case of gleaming platinum (Pt 950), sized at 44mm diameter with a height of 15.90mm, fitted with a box-type sapphire crystal which rises above the housing in order to accommodate the pronounced spherical centrepiece which dominates the dial-side display.
Beating within, the A&S1021 manual winding calibre is configured around the rotating sphere, and through the sapphire crystal underside, the duality of the two-tone moon can be appreciated. The movement has been beautifully decorated with radiating bands of Côtes de Genève and with highly polished anglage defining the edges. Notably the mechanism is so precise that if allowed to run continuously, the moon phase would require an adjustment just once in 122 years.
At its centre, the movement has a secondary moon phase display which indicates precisely the age of the moon, and it also provides a reference with which to calibrate the Luna Magna’s moon phase, easily accessed via the crown. Deriving an impressive ninety hours of power reserve, the Manufacture movement beats at 21’600 vib/h (3Hz).
The Arnold and Son Luna Magna Platinum Meteorite is limited to 28 pieces, and comes presented on a grey alligator leather strap, lined with orange alligator leather and secured with a platinum folding deployant clasp.
