Established in 2002 by friends Morten Linde and Jorn Werdelin, the seriously cool watches manufactured by their independent watch company Linde Werdelin have been stirring up a buzz ever since.

In what seems like only a few short years, they have not only succeeded in maintaining a steadily growing fan base, Linde Werdelin have firmly established themselves as pioneers of groundbreaking non-conformist design and innovative materials, which have become their signature across a collection of high quality sports watches.

The Linde Werdelin Oktopus Moon Carbon is a special edition of the iconic Oktopus collection. Limited to only 59 pieces worldwide, it is a cool, sculpted watch fusing angles and layers in black, gold and deep coffee brown, and it packs a whole lot of presence.

The Oktopus Moon Carbon features a futuristic and functional case of hand layered 3D Thin Ply™ carbon fibre, which is then bonded under immense pressure and machined into its bold and distinctive angular chassis with a satin-smooth touch.

The high-tech black material is finished with subtle striping on its uppermost surfaces, contrasting with circular brushed grain on the bezel and the gold movement plates within, and also houses the 18Kt gold crown and mounts for the Linde Werdelin Reef Instrument, which can be fixed to the Oktopus for use under water. Tiny black gaskets seat the hex socket fixing screws around the bezel as well as those which secure the strap to the case.

Where most manufacturers use a single-piece dial, the Linde Werdelin Oktopus Moon Carbon dial is a construction of five individual laser cut skeletonised discs. The uppermost element with gold numerals and luminous indices is almost fully stripped back to the essentials, whilst below the circular brushed plate features Côtes de Genève ribbing and is vented to display details further into the watch.

Immediately underneath, the shimmer of the perlage decoration on the brushed gold lower disc highlights the rotating photorealistic moon through 14 positions as it mirrors the monthly cycle of the moon.

Beneath the 2.5mm thick sapphire crystal, its skeletonized coffee coloured dial assembly provides a deep and absorbing view of the Frederic Piguet automatic self winding movement below with bespoke Linde Werdelin moonphase module, itself developed in collaboration with watchmaking legend Svend Andersen.

The numerals with rose gold Super LumiNova coating stand out clearly against the black metallic background, and the squared-off brushed gold hands and the hour indices which encircle the perimeter of the dial and the sheer réhaut are coated with Linde Werdelin’s bespoke cool grey lume, ensuring excellent legibility in low light conditions, as with a depth rating of 300m we are reminded that this is a serious professional sports watch.

Turned over, the screw-in caseback is adorned with a great octopus engraving, a theme which is also featured on the surface of the crown.

The Linde Werdelin Oktopus Moon Carbon is presented on a bespoke black strap, made from high grade natural rubber, and which of course is interchangeable with other Linde Werdelin straps, opening up a world of possibilities.

Another point of interest is because of the capped low production numbers each year, these watches do not appear very often at any significant mark-down, and so are likely to retain a stronger resale value than might be expected with other non-mainstream marques.
