Established in 2002 by friends Morten Linde and Jorn Werdelin, the watches manufactured by their independent watch company Linde Werdelin have been stirring up a buzz ever since.
In what seems like only a few short years, they have not only succeeded in maintaining a steadily growing fan base, Linde Werdelin have firmly established themselves as pioneers of groundbreaking non-conformist design, which has become their signature across a collection of high quality sports watches.
The Linde Werdelin Oktopus Double Date Titanium – Red is a stunning special edition of the iconic Oktopus collection. Limited to only 88 pieces worldwide, it is not for the faint-hearted; its sculpted case fusing angles and layers with vibrant red detail, contrasting against the purposeful bare metal body and striking black ceramic bezel, and it packs a whole lot of presence.
Where most manufacturers use a single-piece dial, the Linde Werdelin Oktopus Double Date Titanium – Red dial is a construction of two individual laser cut skeletonised discs. The uppermost element with red detail is almost fully stripped back to the essentials, with the subtle octopus motif at its centre.
Immediately underneath, the application of Côtes de Genéve decoration on the brushed titanium lower disc creates the illusion of rippled water, and two laser cut grilles at the 2 and the 10 reveal the two skeletonised red date wheels which convene just above the centre point of the dial to display the date where the numerals align.
Beneath the 2.5mm thick sapphire crystal, its skeletonized red and metal dial assembly provides a deep and captivating view of the modified Dubois Dépraz automatic self winding movement below.
Luminous red numerals and chapter ring stand out clearly against the silvery metallic background, and the black steel hands and the hour indices are filled with a cool Super LumiNova, ensuring excellent legibility in low light conditions, as with a depth rating of 300m we are reminded that this is a serious professional sports watch.
The angular titanium case is finished with symmetric brushed graining, contrasting with circular brush effects on the black ceramic bezel, which also houses the crown and mounts for the Linde Werdelin Reef Instrument, which can be fixed to the Oktopus for use under water. Tiny red gaskets seat the hex socket fixing screws. Turned over, the screw-in caseback is adorned with a great octopus engraving.
The Linde Werdelin Oktopus Double Date Titanium – Red is presented on a vivid red strap, made from high grade natural rubber, which of course is interchangeable with other Linde Werdelin straps, opening up a world of possibilities.
At The Limited Edition, we do have a strong affinity with Linde Werdelin, and that’s all because of the really attractive bold and instantly recognizable design, the exacting standards of manufacture and finishing, as well as the technically excellent Dubois Dépraz movement which has been further modified by the technicians at Linde Werdelin.
Overall, the Linde Werdelin Oktopus Double Date Titanium - Red is ideal for the man (or woman – and sure why not?) who lives a wide and varied active life, one who also appreciates a great timepiece but prefers the individuality and build quality which goes hand in hand with a brand like Linde Werdelin.
Another point of interest is because of the capped low production numbers each year, these watches do not appear very often at any significant mark-down, and so are likely to retain a stronger resale value than might be expected with other non-mainstream marques.
