With a reputation that places them at the highest pinnacle of the Independent Watchmaking landscape, Laurent Ferrier timepieces are an excellent find for the seasoned collector. Characterised by a superb symbiosis of modern watchmaking technology and old-school watchmaking and finishing techniques, the Atelier has a portfolio that has evolved beautifully and organically since is founding. Technically complex, yet supremely elegant, the Laurent Ferrier Classic Moon Annual Calendar debuts a moon phase to their collection that is arranged to indicate the moon cycles in both Northern and Southern Hemispheres, together with an annual calendar, and is presented in the company’s pebble-like Galet case shape.
Sized at 40mm, with a height of 12.90mm, the case is completely curvilinear and bereft of any flat edges or lines, save for the inner sides of the lugs which flow from the lines of the case, before tapering off to rounded ends. Originally inspired by the pleasing tactile sensation of holding a water-smoothed riverbed pebble in the palm of his hand, Laurent Ferrier titled his rounded case Galet, taken from the French word for pebble, and its combination of gentle yet powerful styling has ensured that it is has become an instantly recognisable and iconic case form. Manufactured in either stainless steel or 18ct red gold, it features a ball-shaped crown which is finely fluted.
Two dial editions of this model will be available, either grey-blue opaline for the stainless steel model, or satin-finished silver for the 18ct red gold model. Laid out beneath the gently domed sapphire crystal, each dial exhibits perfectly proportioned indications, with bevelled windows displaying the days and months at the upper, and with a pointer date that reaches towards its scale at the perimeter via an elegant, elongated hand. The slender roman numerals, markers and railtrack are complemented by Assegai-shaped gold hands that are painted white for the steel case edition. On the lower dial, a small seconds combines with the moon phase indication that indicates both Northern and Southern Hemispheres. An ethereal addition, it features Aventurine glass discs to represent the moon cycles, while the delicate hand-painted moons and stars exhibit incredibly detailed craftsmanship.
The watch is powered by the Laurent Ferrier in-house manual wind calibre LF126.02. Visible thorough the sapphire caseback it displays immaculate finishing throughout, and is equipped with an annual calendar mechanism so precise that its marvellous little mechanical memory will only require correction once per year. Notably, it features the atelier’s acclaimed long blade ratchet pawl that gives additional pleasure while winding the watch, and has the useful inclusion of a power reserve indication on the calibre side. Beating at a leisurely 3Hz, the movement has a power reserve of 80 hours,
