Celebrating its partnership as Official Timer and title sponsor to the Gurnigel Bergrennen hill race in Switzerland, Graham have created a superb new version of the Silverstone RS collection to commemorate the occasion.
At 46mm the Silverstone RS GMT is an imposing piece, and with its white tyre tread rubber strap and flashes of red complementing the dark glass dial it’s not for the bashful. Designed with the driver’s needs foremost in mind, its generous proportions mean that it’s easy to reference and operate in the heat of competition, and the red rubber tipped chronograph controls make for sure-fingered contact.
With the black upper dial pared back to no more than a frame for the hour markers and subdial outlines, it sits above a smoked sapphire floor, through which the perlage finishing on the metal plate and the double date discs are constantly on display. The result of the layered dial and transparency is a striking and eyecatching three dimensional appearance.
The racing theme is reflected in the dashboard-like subdials with red pointers, for the 30-minute chronograph counter and the small seconds at 3 and 9 respectively. Black steel hours and minutes hands are generously filled with Super-LumiNova, as is the red arrow tip of the GMT/second timezone pointer, which references the beige 24-hour numerals on the black ceramic bezel.
The beige theme continues onto the small tachymetre print inside the flange, and the luminous hour markers which bridge across the outer dial, and visually there’s quite a lot to take in, still the functions are clearly defined and easily legible.
Between bezel and the brushed and polished stainless steel case, a red anodised aluminium ring adds yet more drama. Underneath, a bezel with six screws secures a sapphire caseback, sealing it to a rating of 100m, and through which is revealed the drilled oscillating weight of Graham’s G1721 self winding movement, with flyback chronograph, which delivers energy at a rate of 28,800 vph for up to 48 hours.
The Graham Silverstone RS GMT Gurnigel Bergrennen limited edition is presented on a white rubber strap with tyre tread pattern and a single black insert for contrast, and it fastens with a robust steel pin buckle.
