An exclusive timepiece for the discerning collector, the GoS Sarek Akka watch is characterised by hand-crafted elements and superlative craftsmanship. For this model, the company combine monochrome aesthetics with delicate scrollwork engraving to create a truly remarkable addition to their Sarek collection.
The Independent Watchcompany, GoS is an alliance between Master Bladesmith, Johan Gustafsson and Master Watchmaker, Patrik Sjögren. Merging their names and their crafts, the duo create artisan timepieces employing Damascus steel to dramatic effect. Guided by the ancestral styling codes of their Swedish homeland, each GoS piece incorporates references garnered from the country’s wild beauty and the regalia and weaponry of Viking Kings who once roamed the land.
For this piece a third collaborator, the acclaimed engraver Stanley Stoltz joins the GoS fold. Bringing his skilful creativity into mix, his beautiful craftsmanship brings a hint of delicacy to the bezel of the GoS Sarek Akka model. In his decorative fine work one can discern the woody texture of the Mountain Birch which is prevalent in the lowlands of the Akka region for which this piece is named. Meticulously worked, the exquisite repeating pattern offers a refined frame for the extraordinary dial which rests beneath the gently domed sapphire crystal.
Here, the company’s speciality Damascus steel dial displays an entirely monochromatic aesthetic. Completely bereft of the spirited tones of other models, this greyscale edition is no less dramatic than the brand’s more colourful examples. Rather, its broody and handsome façade offers up a wholly organic, raw feel which is instantly compelling.
Taking inspiration from the stark beauty of the Akka Massif, the striking, contrasting nuances of each eternally whirling spiral of the hand-forged dial ensures that the region, known locally as the “Queen of Lapland” has received a deservingly majestic tribute.
Handmade by Gustaffson, each dial is individually crafted using ancient techniques. In his hands, multiple layers of the hard metal are repeatedly fired, folded, hammered and polished, emerging as exquisite slivers with immeasurable subtleties which catch and play with the light. The dial promises endless combinations of contrasts to its wearer, and of course, the hand-forging process dictates that no two dials can ever be the same.
Such an absorbing dial demands domination, and quite rightly it has been given a commanding presence. Allowing its artistry to shine, it is completely lacking in unnecessary clutter. From the centre, the highly polished spear-shaped hour and minutes hands echo the form of Viking weaponry. Together with the elongated seconds hand, they stretch out to the twin-layered index ring which references the form of ancient Viking bracelets. At 12 o’clock, the distinctive GoS logo declares the provenance of the model.
On the casesides, elliptical grooves add texture and interest, while a sapphire section in the caseback reveals the architecture of the Soprod A10. Here one can admire the motion of the GoS Triskele rotor, which is enhanced with a dark satinized finish and its accompanying Damascus steel counterweight.
Boasting the exclusivity of an original artisanal dial, each Gos Sarek Akka watch comes presented on a hand-made Moose leather strap which secures to the wrist with a stainless steel GoS buckle.
