GARRICK S5 REVIEW

A piece which embraces a traditional artisanal dial and one which introduces a new manual winding exclusive proprietary calibre to the portfolio of this independent watchmaking company, the Garrick S5 model is a supremely elegant timepiece. Presented in a more discreet case size, this beautifully crafted model captures the essence of the contemporary dress watch aesthetic thorough its flawless execution and assembly.

Although a youthful addition to the watchmaking landscape, independent watchmaking company Garrick have already captured the attention of discerning collectors around the world. Displaying nuances of quintessential English watchmaking flair together with mechanical sophistication, each piece in the Garrick collection is individually produced by hand in their Norfolk atelier by their small team of master watchmakers. Showcasing visually delightful hand guilloché dials in a choice of options, together with a new proprietary manual wind calibre, the Garrick S5 series is a splendid evolution of the portfolio of this exciting company.

The watch resides in a polished case of 904L stainless steel or in rose gold, with a flat waist and rounded bezel, contoured lugs and a squat onion style crown. Sized at 39mm, and with a height of 8mm, its profile evokes a discreet wrist presence.

Beneath the sapphire crystal, the dial is gracefully refined and magnificent. Rendered in gold or rhodium plated silver, and with a number of colour options to choose from, each one is hand crafted and finished within the Garrick atelier. The central section of the dial  is enhanced with a beautiful rose-engine turned guilloché motif whose intricate overlapping engraving catches and plays with the light, creating a mesmerising surface. From the centre, the signature Garrick Maritime hands, with their generous anchor-formed counterweights are a noble feature, and are finished with either heat bluing or polished detailing. On the outer dial, one has the option of an impeccably decorated solid chapter ring upon which the Roman numerals are laser engraved and inked by hand or, alternatively, of a distinctively styled skeletonised chapter ring with a heat blued or polished décor.

On the underside, one can admire the exceptional three-quarter plate arrangement of the new proprietary manual wind movement, the Garrick UT-G05 calibre which is revealed through a sapphire caseback. Notably, the balance is fully visible and is secured with a hand bevelled three-spoked bridge allowing for a full appreciation of its oscillation. Finished with a gold or silver finish in the traditional British frosted aesthetic, the movement beats at a frequency of 21’600vph, and has a power reserve of at least 60 hours.

A superb example of an atelier-crafted timepiece, which enjoys the advantage of a dial tailored to suit the individual client, the Garrick S5 model comes presented on a choice of leather strap, each secured with a pin buckle in 316L stainless steel.
