From Norfolk based independent watch company Garrick, the new S4 is a watch which encapsulates all of the aesthetic essence and hand crafted tradition which defines this young and uniquely British brand, in a superbly finished time piece featuring an in-house upgraded Swiss ETA movement.
In its relatively short lifetime, Garrick has proven to be a company quite unlike any other emerging British watch brands. Driven by the legacy of a long ago heritage in watchmaking, which in the seventeenth century placed England as the centre of horologic innovation and invention for the rest of the world, Garrick came into being with a mission to rekindle a dormant spark and create a range of hand manufactured watches, with an emphasis on British sourced craftsmanship and materials.
With its small team of master watchmakers, this remarkable artisanal company has resisted the obvious cheaper option of outsourcing any components which it was possible to either manufacture either in-house or source locally, by stoically persevering and refining its capabilities to earn its reputation for uncompromising attention to detail the hard way. Garrick truly is a labour of love, and each one of its watches are individual and produced by hand.
The S4 is the latest reference to be added to the brand’s portfolio, and while positioned as the entry model to the Garrick range, thanks to its production Swiss Unitas manual winding movement, it is a piece which otherwise retains all of the aesthetic and finishing virtues of its siblings.
The round case measures 42mm across, and is manufactured in 904L stainless steel, with a flat waist and rounded bezel, contoured lugs and a squat onion style crown, and the brushed and polished finishing creates a subtle but discernible contrast.
Beneath the sapphire crystal the dial is created and finished in the Garrick atelier by hand, and is classical in silver with contrasting circular grained brush finishing and a finely textured frosted effect in the centre. The chapter ring and small seconds surround are individually applied on top, and feature black hand-inked roman numerals and minute markings. The familiar Garrick Maritime hands are finished with heat bluing, while the seconds subdial has a beautiful engine turned guilloché pattern, whose intricate overlapping engraving catches the light.
While the S4 is the standard model, other variations are also available, and include the choice of a fully guilloché dial with blue pvd treatment or gold plating.
On the underside, a sapphire caseback reveals the Swiss manual winding movement, which has been significantly modified by Garrick, featuring an in-house produced and finished three quarter plate, which is available with a choice of either rhodium or gold plated options. A beautifully engraved rhodiumised plate covers the barrel and winding mechanism, and a screw-calibrated balance replaces the original, all of which transform the appearance and standing of this popular and reliable Unitas 6498 calibre, and elevate it to Garrick’s high standards. Fully wound the BF03 calibre boasts a power reserve of at least forty two hours with a frequency of 18’000 vib/h.
A superb watch which combines the classic elegance of a dress watch with the contemporary caché of a modern independent manufacturer, the Garrick S4 is presented on a black alligator leather strap with pin buckle.
