Not only is Frédéric Jouvenot a prodigiously talented young watchmaker and creator of horological fantasies, he is also the dynamic and energetic driver behind his eponymous independent watch company whose astonishing collections have won over the hearts and minds of collectors and critics alike. Of course all manufacturers of mechanical timepieces are inextricably bound to the centuries old invention of their forebears, but in how these old ‘blueprints’ are interpreted Frédéric Jouvenot have parted company with tradition, and so their watches which leave the atelier in la Chaux-de-Fonds really are like no others.
Following on from the critical acclaim won by the Solar Deity collection, where each model celebrates the great and ancient sun gods feared by civilisations, with the Frédéric Jouvenot Moon Deity Sîn collection, the watchmaker has once again broken the mould of the conventional. Sîn is dedicated to Mesopotamian god of the moon, and it charts the passage of time and the sky above across the span of 24 hours of day and night, and of the sunrise and sunset, which he has displayed to wonderful effect using an ingenious patented system of opposing rotating sun and moon orbs and a play on the eye. Released in an exclusive edition limited to only 18 pieces, the Sîn Blue Dial Steel edition introduces a vivid colour tone to the dial, enhancing and enlivening the unique multi-layered arrangement of the model.
Whilst displaying time in a vaguely recognisable 12-hour format via the short openworked hour hand, which has been mounted so as to hover as it travels, and the signature minutes by way of rotating central dome, the beautiful little sun orb and its opposing moon complete a circuit of the dial every 24 hours with the sun appearing from behind the cleverly designed split level dial at 6am and then disappearing again at 6pm, when the moon emerges and takes over for the following 12 hours.
Turn the watch over and a sapphire crystal caseback reveals the immaculate detail and hand finishing on the in-house manufacture manual movement within. Beating at a frequency of 28’800 vib/h, the movement has a power reserve of 50 hours when fully wound. The Frédéric Jouvenot Sîn Blue Dial Steel watch is limited to a production of only 18 pieces, and is presented on a black leather strap with folding clasp.
Instantly recognisable, and adored by collectors around the world, Konstantin Chaykin’s ‘Wrist Monster’ series of timepieces has become an icon of contemporary independent watchmaking. Known
