FIONA KRÜGER PETIT SKULL BLUE REVIEW

Exhibiting extraordinary artisanship throughout, the Petit Skull Blue watch by Fiona Krüger expertly blends Haute Horlogerie with artistic expression. A definitive piece within the collection of this exciting independent watchmaking company, the watch displays a contemporary rendering of the skull motif, which has been used by watchmakers for centuries to evoke time and mortality.  Defined by the significant level of craftsmanship used in its execution, the piece also offers a technical aspect, with visible components of its mechanical movement revealed through its métiers d’art dial, which has been created in partnership with Kari Voutilanen’s dial atelier Comblémine.

Capturing the imaginative spirit of their creator, Fiona Krüger watches are expressive statements of the artist’s philosophy of life and her well considered approach to design. With a background in Fine Art and Product Design, followed by a Masters of Advance Studies in Design for the Luxury Industry at ECAL in Switzerland, Fiona established her eponymous company in 2013. Having collaborated with some of the most prestigious names in the watch industry, her timepieces are indicative of her eye for detail and her knowledge of mechanical horology, and her evolving portfolio of exclusive timepieces blend the two disciplines harmoniously, resulting in an extraordinary collection defined by originality.

Presented in a skull shaped case of stainless steel measuring 48mm by 34.5mm, the housing of the watch is beautifully crafted. The lugs are tucked within the caseback to ensure an ergonomic wear, and with the crown at the topmost position, the profile remains uninterrupted. The dial of the watch comprises of 3 layers, and incorporates 6 individual components of exquisite guilloché work by the prestigious Comblémine dial atelier. Entirely contemporary in its aesthetic, and under the direction of Fiona, the guillocheuse has employed the decorative work as an artist would use paint, thus creating an effect which complements the profile of the skull façade while also creating a wholly absorbing surface décor. Specifically designed patterns have been achieved to enhance the skull’s face, with a tighter Ecailles de poisson motif to highlight the nose and mouth, while on the forehead and teeth where less definition is required, Soleil 12 Divisions avec traits prononcés is used. Elsewhere, Perlage decoration draws attention to the teeth, while through each eye, the visible balance wheel and mainspring add drama. Finishing the arrangement, the voluptuous hour and minute hands reach out to hand-polished black studs which serve as hour markers

Adhering to the design dialogue of the watch, the Swiss self winding movement is revealed through an sapphire opening in the caseback shaped like the rear of a human cranium. Here, one can admire the customised oscillating mass which is decorated with Ecailles de poisson guillochage with a Bleu Royale galvanised finish.

A watch which displays stunning depth and beauty, the Petit Skull Blue watch by Fiona Krüger is limited to only 18 pieces. The model comes presented on a hand-stitched leather strap with steel pin buckle.
