FIONA KRÜGER ENTROPY 1 COBALT CRASH REVIEW

A confident design from this exciting independent watchmaking company, the Entropy 1 Cobalt Crash by Fiona Krüger is a highly complex and expressive timepiece. With a façade whose composition contradicts the orderly passage of time, replacing it with the scientific principle of the forward motion of order towards chaos, the concept of the watch captures the imagination and its spectacular dial arrangement thrills the aesthetic senses. Brimming with originality, the prestige of the model is elevated by the technically challenging arrangement of its mechanical movement, developed in partnership with specialist movement developer Agenhor

Blurring the lines between artistic expression and Haute Horlogerie Fiona Krüger watches are statements of the artist’s philosophy of life and her well considered approach to design. With a background in Fine Art and Product Design, followed by a Masters of Advance Studies in Design for the Luxury Industry at ECAL in Switzerland, Fiona established her eponymous company in 2013. Having collaborated with some of the most prestigious names in the watch industry, her timepieces are indicative of her eye for detail and her knowledge of mechanical horology, and her evolving portfolio of exclusive timepieces blend the two disciplines harmoniously, resulting in an extraordinary collection defined by originality. Forming part of the company’s evolving portfolio, the Entropy 1 Cobalt Crash is part of a series limited to only 18 pieces

Presented in a titanium tonneau-shaped case with a blue PVD inner ring, and sized at 48mm by 40mm, the housing of the case has been finished with brushed and polished techniques. With the crown positioned topmost, the casing joins the bezel to provide a frame for the extraordinary three-dimensional miniature artwork which makes up the dial. Comprising of a multi-layer architecture, the dial surface has been created to showcase specific components of the calibre through shatter effect openworked sections, achieved in vivid blue tones.  Immediately arresting, it appears as if the calibre is attempting to break free of its housing onto the surface of the dial, and glimpses of its exposed wheels, finishing with the hand-painted “exploding” barrel at the top right sector, serve to enhance the illusion. Polished shard shaped hour and minutes hands add to the effect, and emphasising the three-dimensional aspect, the hour markers which explode inwards, have been rendered onto the underside of the sapphire crystal.

Displaying an entirely wholistic approach, the calibre and watch have been designed and created as one. The result of a collaborative partnership with Geneva based movement innovators Agenhor, the CHAOS 1 mechanical manual wind movement which has a power reserve of 50 hours, exhibits an in-line architecture, with the gear train along the length of the mechanism. Beautifully hand finished throughout, but with a firmly contemporary feel, the airy arrangement of the movement can also be enjoyed though the open sections on the reverse side of the watch.

An exceptional, technically accomplished timepiece and a superb example of contemporary independent watchmaking, the Entropy 1 Cobalt Crash by Fiona Krüger is a limited edition of 18 pieces. The model comes with a hand-stitched technical fabric watch strap, secured with a titanium pin buckle.
