Completely in line with the brand’s non-conformist approach to watch design, when it was first launched in 1980 the Golden Bridge by Corum was well ahead of its time. Boasting a bespoke linear mechanical movement, by one of the most respected names in independent watchmaking, Vincent Calabrese, its looks and technical execution were like nothing that had been seen before.

Thanks to a renewed emphasis on this classic piece in recent years, the modern collection continues to astound and fascinate; its slender hand winding calibre still absolutely irresistible to the eye, its lines graceful and elegant, and signed off in Corum’s distinctly quirky styling.

With the crown nestling between the lugs at the six o’clock position, the round profile of the 43mm 5N 18Kt rose gold case is pure and uncluttered, and with a ring of sapphire for its midsection as well as a sapphire case back, it lets the light flood in, creating a little wrist-borne showcase for its delightful horologic centrepiece.

Flanking the movement on either side, the open worked dial comprises a complex lattice work in satin brushed rose gold, inspired by San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge, and creating a superb technical three dimensional effect, and accentuating the unique void of the Golden Bridge usually required by a conventional movement. Time is displayed in hours and minutes only, by a pair of brass-toned hands.

Of course the piéce de resistance is the mechanical assembly in the centre. A triumph of miniaturisation, the Calbre CO 113 packs all of the essential components of a hand winding movement in a linear baguette arrangement of considerable complexity. Everything is exposed, from the winding mechanism next to the crown, up through the gear train and barrel, on to the balance and escapement at the top. The hand engraved gold plate which runs from top to bottom provides anchorage for the jewels and pinions and all surfaces have been brushed and polished leaving a really fine finish to the assembly. Even with its reduced confines, and beating at 28,800vph, it still delivers forty hours of energy when fully wound by hand.

The Corum Golden Bridge Round 43 is presented on a brown alligator leather strap with folding clasp.
