ARMIN STROM DUAL TIME RESONANCE SAPPHIRE

The Armin Strom Dual Time Resonance Sapphire is a show-stopping watch of unparalleled uniqueness. Featuring an ultra-complex, patented mechanism housed within a completely transparent housing, the timepiece is a visual lesson in watchmaking excellence.

In every respect this is a remarkable timepiece.  In a unique arrangement, it features two independent mechanical movements laid side-by-side on the same mainplate.  In tandem, their balance wheels oscillate in perfect resonance with one another and in doing so they produce greater stability than can be achieved with one single balance.

Between them, is the tiny device which earns this wristwatch its iconic status – the company’s patented Resonance Clutch Spring.  This technically advanced mechanism provides a direct mechanical link to the pair, ensuring that they operate in complete harmony, without the reliance on any external forces which could impact on their reliability.

One can view the mesmerising performance of the two balance springs as they dance in unison at the 12 o’clock location.  Steadying them, with precise, vertical pulses, the Resonance Clutch Spring takes up position at their centre.  This full disclosure of the pair of tiny mechanical hearts, beating with one rhythmic heartbeat is immediately compelling.

Accompanying this stunning animation, two exquisite blue guilloché dials, rendered in differing shades, enable the wearer to read the time in two different time zones.  Here, a traditional rail-track for the minutes, and Roman numerals at each hour, lend a superb traditional contrast to the contemporary aesthetic of the stark mainplate beneath them.

At the 6 o’clock location each dial has its own dedicated power reserve indicator. Interlocking with the two, a guillochéd dial at the 6 o’clock location, serves as a 24-hour day/night indication.

In-keeping with the ethos of the company’s eponymous founder, who favoured open-work and skeletonisation in order to enable the wearer to view a watch’s micro-mechanics at work, all Armin Strom watches exhibit their inner workings.  However, for this model, the company have taken the concept to its absolute maximum, enabling a complete exposé through a transparent watch case.

Despite the technical challenges of working with sapphire, Armin Strom have crafted a curvaceous oval construction measuring 59mm x 43.4mm which enables an intimate, anatomical view of every aspect of the impressive mechanisms of the Dual Time Resonance. Regardless of its crystal-clear qualities and frangible appearance, the sapphire is completely scratch-resistant and highly durable.

Turn the piece over and a new, fascinating dimension of the watch is revealed.  Here, a quartet of barrels dominates the scene, against a background of circular hand-decoration.  Each movement is powered by its own pair of barrels, in an arrangement which sends power only to their dedicated oscillator, avoiding any impact on the resonance. Together their open-worked structure tells the inside story of mechanical wizardry, as all four turn in unison when the wearer winds the watch.  Elsewhere, a glimpse of the rear-side of each power reserve mechanism is an additional, eye-pleasing feature.

Presented on a black alligator leather strap, the Armin Strom Dual Time Resonance Sapphire model is a phenomenal showcase for contemporary watchmaking.
