Anton Suhanov Racer Retro

Winner of the Young Watchmaker’s Award in 2016, Anton Suhanov previously worked as a chief designer in the watch Manufactory of Master Watchmaker, Konstantin Chaykin. Having announced his arrival onto the independent watchmaking landscape with the acclaimed Racer Jumping Hour GMT, his follow up, the spectacular Racer Retro watch features an openworked dial arrangement that enables an exceptional display of the complexities of the movement, finished with contemporary sand toned and black guilloché decoration.

Set against a black dial with deep guilloché decoration, the hours and minutes are displayed across a pair of sand-toned dashboard like subdials, which, with their perforated hands and scripted markings, authentically capture the look of a speedometer and rev counter. Coupled with Suhanov’s in-house retrograde mechanism, the hands spring back to zero as they reach the end of their cycles, with the minutes on the right and the hours on the left. Whilst the minutes have a sweeping action, the hours, as with the second GMT hour digit, jump from hour to hour, and a linear twenty seconds display between the hours and minutes completes the triple retrograde formation. Finishing the dial, a round aperture at the six o’clock position displays the date. Unlike his debut piece, the Racer Retro has a partially openworked dial with four dial openings, two at the centre of the hours and minutes subdials, with an additional two on the upper dial which take the form of a bat-like motif. Through these openings the black calibre components can be appreciated, and the mechanisms for the retrograde hours and minutes and the GMT display are showcased.

Measuring 39mm diameter, and manufactured from stainless steel, the case has been redesigned with enhancement to the shape of the lugs giving a more contemporary profile to the housing, and it is finished with a grained brushed effect with polished angles and edges that create an eye catching contrast. A pert pusher just above the crown adjusts the GMT hour digit, which can be used as a reminder of home time, while the analogue dials display local time when travelling.

A sapphire caseback reveals a full disc oscillating weight featuring a domed form that recalls the hubcaps of classic 1950s American cars, which is beautifully finished with a fine circular brushed technique. Using a Swiss ETA 2824-2 self-winding calibre as a base, the young watchmaker invented and developed his own highly complex module to achieve the unique functionality of the Racer Retro watch. Finished to the exacting requirements of traditional Haute Horlogerie, the Su100.25 calibre operates at a brisk 28’800 vib/h (4Hz), with a minimum power reserve of thirty-eight hours. The Anton Suhanov Retro Racer is presented on a brown leather strap secured with a buckle in stainless steel styled in the form of a sports car spoiler.
