Founded by the Dodane family in 1934, Montres Airain have a significant provenance within the watchmaking landscape. The arrival of quartz timepieces had a detrimental effect on the business, and having been revived by enthusiast Tom van Wijlick following a lengthy slumber, Airain are back in business alongside their original sister company, Lebois & Co.
Evoking an effortlessly cool aesthetic, the Sous-Marine Deep Blue watch is an authentic recreation of a classic model from the historical portfolio of Airain. Incredibly stylish on the wrist, the model is housed within a stainless steel casing, with a brushed and polished finish sized at 37.5mm across, with a height 12.77mm, topped with a double domed sapphire crystal. Sealed to withstand water resistance of up to 200mm, this superb edition is also available with the option of a Parmentier crown cap system than enables the wearer to unscrew the crown and use it to wind the automatic movement if desired. The unidirectional bezel is rendered with a black PVD coating with brilliant white markings, and its 120 click mechanism operates smoothly, while integrating seamlessly with the case, the FixoFlex stainless bracelet and the rubber strap have quick release push pins for easy change over.
Clean, crisp and legible, the dial is rendered in deep blue with contrasting Super-LumiNova in a ‘Light Old Radium’ tone giving the generous numerals and markers vintage appeal, and the robust sword shaped hour hand and arrow-tipped minutes hand are accompanied by a lollipop style seconds hand. Perfectly proportioned, the window located at the 3 o’clock displays the date with alternating red and white numerals.
Inside, and beating at a rate of 28’800 vib/h, the automatic calibre AM5 which has been developed by La Joux-Perret features a tungsten central rotor, and has a power reserve of 68 hours. Hidden behind the closed caseback that features an engraving of a diver, the movement is finished with Côtes de Genève decoration, and features blued and polished screws.
